Note: I read this book as an adult.I flatter myself that I can tell whether a book is “good†or “bad†after reading only the first page. However, there are books that start off well and gradually worsen. “Hoot†is such a book. The beginning is exciting and raises many questions so that you easily read on. I also like the book for its attempt to raise children’s awareness for the environment, as well as its attempt to encourage children to stand up for their beliefs and do what is “rightâ€. I also like the main characters Roy, Beatrice and “Mullet Fingers†(the latter a Huck Finn-figure), as these are all “outsiders†in their own ways but stand up for themselves.But otherwise, the plot is full of clichés. It is the typical children vs. grown-ups-story where almost all the grown-ups are corrupt or stupid (or both) and where children fight to get the upper hand. The passages where Hiaasen tells an event from an adult’s point of view are not effective and sometimes even so superfluous that one really wonders why he included them in the first place. The ending is way too corny.3 stars for the book’s “messageâ€, for which the book can also be discussed in English lessons!
What a hoot! This is Hiaasen at his best. After reading all his fiction for the adult audience (and loving most of it), I got into this fabulously entertaining and heart-warming book and have bought a few more to give away as presents since. Nothing missing here, just a tad more stomach-friendly when the plot comes to the crunch, quite appropriately so considering the audience. A groovy feel-good story for the environmentally considerate, and a definite recommendation!
I didn't realise that this book was aimed at children but I couldn't resist not reading this book. Carl Hiaasen is a brilliant, witty and amusing author and this book has all that!The only thing that struck me about this book is that it was easier to get my head around that some of his adult books. A worthwhile read for children and also for the fans.
